About Great Mosque of Djenné
Djenné was a major center of trade and Islamic learning in the Inland Niger Delta. Its Great Mosque, rebuilt in 1907 on the site of a medieval original, is the finest example of Sudano-Sahelian architecture. Three towers studded with wooden beams rise above a massive earthen prayer hall, and the beams serve as permanent scaffolding. The town around it is also a UNESCO site, with traditional earthen houses lining sandy lanes.
Because rain erodes the surface, the whole community replasters the mosque each year in a festive event called the Crépissage. Teams race to carry baskets of mud up ladders while musicians play. Non-Muslims have not been permitted inside since the late 1990s, but the exterior and Monday market in front are memorable. Security conditions in central Mali have greatly limited travel in recent years. The ritual unites generations. Elders supervise the work.
