What is spiritual tourism?

Spiritual tourism is travel motivated by faith, inner growth or curiosity about sacred traditions. It includes classic pilgrimages such as the Hajj, the Camino de Santiago or the Kumbh Mela, as well as visits to temples, monasteries, sacred mountains and ancient sanctuaries for reflection and cultural understanding.

Can people of any religion visit these sacred sites?

Most sacred sites in this atlas welcome respectful visitors of every background. A few places restrict entry, for example Mecca and Medina admit only Muslims and some Hindu temples admit only Hindus to the inner sanctum. Each site guide states access rules, dress codes and etiquette.

What are the most visited pilgrimage sites in the world?

Among the most visited are the Kumbh Mela at Prayagraj, the Masjid al-Haram in Mecca, the Golden Temple in Amritsar, the Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe in Mexico City, Tirumala Venkateswara Temple, St. Peter's Basilica in Vatican City and Lourdes in France.
