About Imam Reza Shrine, Mashhad

Imam Ali al-Rida, the eighth Imam of Twelver Shia Islam, died in 818 CE in the village that grew into Mashhad, a name meaning place of martyrdom. His tomb became the heart of a sprawling sacred complex that now covers more than a square kilometer. It includes the Goharshad Mosque, a Timurid masterpiece built by Queen Goharshad, as well as libraries, seminaries and museums. It is the only shrine of a Twelver Imam located inside Iran.

Millions of pilgrims arrive each year, making Mashhad one of the busiest religious destinations on earth. The golden dome above the tomb glows at night across mirrored halls and tiled courtyards. Non-Muslim visitors are generally welcome in the courtyards and museums, often with a free guide from the international affairs office, but the inner sanctuary around the tomb is reserved for Muslims. Women must wear a chador, which can be borrowed at the gates.
