About Nag Hammadi and Jabal al-Tarif
In December 1945 farmers digging for fertile soil beneath the cliffs of Jabal al-Tarif uncovered a sealed jar holding thirteen leather-bound codices. The find, now called the Nag Hammadi library, transformed the study of Gnosticism, a family of early mystical movements that taught salvation through secret knowledge, or gnosis. Texts such as the Gospel of Thomas had been known only through the hostile summaries of their critics.
The books were probably hidden by monks connected with the nearby Pachomian monasteries, among the earliest communal monastic houses in Christian history. The cliffs also hold ancient rock tombs, giving the landscape a layered sacred history from pharaonic burials to early monasticism.
Today the codices are kept in the Coptic Museum in Cairo. Visitors combine the cliffs with the Pachomian site of Faw Qibli and the great temple of Dendera, about an hour away.
