About Pantheon, Rome
Marcus Agrippa built the first Pantheon, and Hadrian rebuilt it in the form we see now, still carrying Agrippa's name across the portico. The temple was dedicated to the gods of Rome, and its perfect geometry, with a dome as wide as it is high, may have mirrored the heavens. Sunlight through the open oculus moves across the coffered vault like a sundial.
In 609 Pope Boniface IV consecrated it as the church of Santa Maria ad Martyres, which saved it from the decay that claimed other ancient temples. Raphael and two Italian kings are buried inside. On Pentecost, firefighters drop rose petals through the oculus to recall the descent of the Holy Spirit.
