1. Kumbh or Ardh Kumbh? What Haridwar holds in 2027
Haridwar holds a full Kumbh about every 12 years and an Ardh Kumbh, or half Kumbh, about six years after each one. The last full Kumbh was in 2021, and it was cut short and kept small by the Covid pandemic. The one before was in 2010. So by the traditional cycle, the 2027 mela is an Ardh Kumbh.
Uttarakhand has decided to hold it on the scale of a Purna Kumbh. Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami announced in November 2025 that the 2027 Ardh Kumbh would be celebrated as grandly as a full Kumbh, and that for the first time sadhus and saints would take the Amrit Snan, the royal bath of the akharas, during an Ardh Kumbh. He said the state expects many times more devotees than in 2010 and 2021.
In October 2026 the state launched an official logo, anthem and website under the name Haridwar Kumbh Mela 2027. Whichever name you use, the dates and the ghats are the same.
2. All ten snan dates for Haridwar Kumbh 2027
The bathing calendar was announced by the Chief Minister with the acharyas and saints of all 13 akharas on the banks of the Ganga, and later confirmed by the Mela Officer, Sonika Singh. These are the ten bathing days:
14 January: Makar Sankranti. 6 February: Mauni Amavasya. 11 February: Basant Panchami. 20 February: Magh Purnima. 6 March: Mahashivratri, Amrit Snan. 8 March: Phalgun Amavasya, Amrit Snan. 7 April: Nav Samvatsar, the Hindu new year. 14 April: Mesh Sankranti, Amrit Snan. 15 April: Ram Navami. 20 April: Chaitra Purnima.
The three Amrit Snan days are when the akharas walk in procession to Har Ki Pauri in a fixed order and bathe first, before the public. They are the most dramatic days of the mela and also the most crowded. On these days expect road closures and restricted access to the main ghat while the processions pass.
The bathing times on each day are set by the akharas and the mela administration. Check the official Haridwar Kumbh website in the week before your bath.
3. Har Ki Pauri and the ghats
Har Ki Pauri, the steps of the Lord, is the most sacred ghat in Haridwar and the heart of every Kumbh. The Haridwar district administration records the tradition that it was built by King Vikramaditya. Each evening thousands gather here for the Ganga aarti, when lamps are raised and floated on the river as the sun goes down.
Har Ki Pauri cannot hold a Kumbh crowd on its own, so the bath spreads along many ghats on both banks. For 2027 the state is building new ghats, expanding Kangra Ghat and repairing existing ones. In July 2026 the Chief Minister launched about Rs 235 crore of works around the Ganga corridor, including a Rs 66.76 crore redevelopment of Har Ki Pauri and Subhash Ghat.
Any ghat on the Ganga within the mela area carries the same merit on a snan day, so there is no need to push towards Har Ki Pauri itself. The state plans lifeguards, safety ropes and motorboats at each ghat. Bathe only where these are in place, and hold the chains or ropes, as the current is strong.
4. Getting to Haridwar
By air: the nearest airport is Jolly Grant Airport in Dehradun, about 37 km from Haridwar. International travellers usually fly into Delhi and continue by road or rail.
By train: Haridwar station on Northern Railway has direct trains from Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata and other major cities. Indian Railways usually runs extra trains for big melas, and the Mela Officer has reviewed rail readiness at Haridwar station. Book as early as reservations open, and expect very full trains around the Amrit Snan days.
By road: Haridwar is well connected by bus and car from Delhi, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Punjab and the rest of Uttarakhand. During the mela, private vehicles are stopped at parking areas at the entry points, and shuttles carry pilgrims towards the ghats. Expect to walk the last stretch, sometimes for several kilometres on snan days.
5. Where to stay
Haridwar has hotels, dharamshalas and ashram guest houses, but nowhere near enough beds for a Kumbh crowd. Many pilgrims stay in Rishikesh or Dehradun and travel in for the bath. On Amrit Snan days that journey can take far longer, so stay inside Haridwar if you can for those dates.
The mela administration is planning a temporary city with camp sites, and special tent areas have been planned at Shyampur, Gandikhata and Chandighat. Many akharas and ashrams also run camps where pilgrims can stay. When we checked in early November 2026 we did not find an official public booking system for tents, so treat any website that claims to sell official Kumbh tents with caution until the state confirms it.
Whatever you book, ask how far it is from the nearest ghat on foot, because vehicles are restricted on the main days.
6. Crowd and safety tips
Arrive the day before your bath and walk the route from your room to the ghat in daylight. On the morning itself, leave early and keep the plan simple.
Fix a meeting point that cannot be confused, such as a numbered police post or a named temple, and agree on a time to meet if you are separated. Write a phone number on a card in every child's and every older person's pocket. The mela administration plans helplines and information centres for pilgrims.
Follow the one way routes and barriers set by the police, even when they add distance. Do not stop on bridges or narrow lanes, and do not push forward when a crowd is packed. Carry photo ID, water, a light shawl and a small amount of cash. January and February mornings in Haridwar are cold, and the river water is colder still, so bring dry clothes to change into.
If you have heart or breathing problems, or are travelling with very elderly parents, talk to your doctor and think hard about avoiding the Amrit Snan days. Temporary hospitals and mobile medical teams will run in the mela area.
7. Best days to go if you want smaller crowds
The calmest time to bathe is on an ordinary weekday between the main dates, when the ghats are busy but walkable. Late January and the days between Magh Purnima on 20 February and Mahashivratri on 6 March are good windows for a quieter visit.
If you want to see the akhara processions, plan for 6 March, 8 March or 14 April, but book early, stay close and be ready for long walks. The two days around Mahashivratri and Phalgun Amavasya fall close together, so the city will be crowded through that whole week.
Haridwar pairs well with Rishikesh and, later in the year, with the Char Dham Yatra, whose temples usually open in late April or May. At 31° North we can build a Haridwar Kumbh trip around a quiet bathing day with time in Rishikesh before or after.
