Frequently asked questions
How long is the Kailash parikrama and how high does it go?
The outer parikrama of Mount Kailash is about 52 km, walked over three days. Its highest point is the Dolma La pass at about 5,630 m. Ponies and porters can be hired, but every pilgrim must be fit for the altitude.
What permits are needed for the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra?
Pilgrims entering Tibet need a Chinese group visa and Tibet travel permits, arranged only through an authorised operator. India's government-run yatra is a separate route with its own application and draw. Rules change from season to season, so we confirm them for your passport when you book.
How fit do I need to be for the Kailash yatra?
You should be able to walk 15 to 20 km a day at high altitude. Start training two to three months ahead with long walks and stair climbs, and see your doctor first. Our route adds acclimatisation days so the body can adjust before the parikrama.
What is the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra route from India?
There are three ways in. The Indian government (MEA) yatra uses the Lipulekh Pass in Uttarakhand or the Nathu La Pass in Sikkim. Private tours, like ours, fly from India to Kathmandu and cross into Tibet from Nepal. All routes end at Lake Manasarovar and the parikrama of Mount Kailash.
Is this the Indian government Kailash Mansarovar Yatra?
No. The government yatra is run by the Ministry of External Affairs, with an online application on kmy.gov.in and a computerised draw for a limited number of places. Our journey is a private yatra through Nepal, with permits arranged by licensed operators, so it does not depend on the draw.
Do I need to register on kmy.gov.in for a private Kailash tour?
No. Registration on kmy.gov.in and the draw apply only to the government MEA yatra. For a private tour through Nepal, an authorised operator applies for the Chinese group visa and Tibet permits for you, and needs a passport valid for at least six months.
How much does the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra cost?
We quote per group for your dates. For comparison, Nepal operators quoted about US$1,550 to US$1,700 per person from Kathmandu for the 2026 season, before flights to Nepal (Kathmandu Post, May 2026), and the government MEA yatra cost about Rs 2.09 lakh per person on the Lipulekh route in 2026. Send an enquiry and a specialist will reply with a tailored quote.
How many days is the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra?
The standard itinerary is 14 days. It can be shortened or extended to suit you.
When is the best time for the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra?
May to September
How demanding is the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra?
The pace is demanding. It is ideal for fit pilgrims prepared for high altitude.
