About Bhimbetka Rock Shelters
In the forested foothills of the Vindhya Range, the Bhimbetka rock shelters preserve some of the oldest traces of human life and art in India. Hundreds of sandstone overhangs were used as homes over an immense span of time, and many carry paintings in red and white showing hunts, animals, dancers and figures that may depict ritual or spirit beings.
Scholars see in these scenes glimpses of early religious life, from communal dances to masked figures and symbols. Local tradition links the name to Bhima of the Mahabharata, and a small goddess temple sits on the hill. Only part of the site is open, along a well marked trail.
