About Pyramids of Giza and the Great Sphinx
The three great pyramids of Khufu, Khafre and Menkaure rise from the desert edge west of Cairo. They were tombs intended to ensure the pharaoh's rebirth and journey to join the sun god and the stars. Each pyramid was the centerpiece of a complex with valley and mortuary temples where priests made offerings for the king's spirit. The Great Pyramid is the only surviving wonder of the ancient world. Their precision still impresses.
The Great Sphinx, a lion with a king's head carved from the bedrock, guards the causeway to Khafre's pyramid and was later worshipped as a form of the god Horus. Visitors can enter some pyramid chambers and see the reconstructed solar boat. The Grand Egyptian Museum nearby now holds treasures that bring the site's beliefs to life. At sunset the desert light turns the stone gold, and a sound and light show runs some evenings.
