About Church of the Nativity, Bethlehem
The Church of the Nativity stands over a cave that Christian tradition identifies as the birthplace of Jesus. Constantine and Helena built the first basilica in the fourth century, and Emperor Justinian rebuilt it in the sixth. It is among the oldest churches in continuous daily use. Visitors enter through the low Door of Humility, which forces almost everyone to bow. In 2012 it became the first World Heritage Site inscribed under the name of Palestine.
Inside, rows of red limestone columns lead toward the altar, and recently restored mosaics glint on the upper walls. Steps descend into the Grotto of the Nativity, where a silver star marks the traditional spot of the birth. The Greek Orthodox, Roman Catholic and Armenian churches share custody. Next door, the Church of Saint Catherine hosts the Catholic midnight Mass broadcast worldwide on Christmas Eve. Manger Square outside is the lively center of the town.
