About Imam Ali Shrine, Najaf

Ali ibn Abi Talib, cousin and son-in-law of the Prophet Muhammad, is revered by Shia Muslims as the first Imam and by all Muslims as the fourth caliph. His tomb in Najaf lies under a gleaming golden dome flanked by two golden minarets. The shrine sits at the heart of an old city that has been a leading center of Shia scholarship for a thousand years. Pilgrims kiss the shrine's silver grille.

Beside the city spreads Wadi al-Salam, one of the largest cemeteries in the world, where many Shia Muslims wish to be buried near Ali. Pilgrims often visit Najaf together with Karbala, and the walk between the two cities before Arbaeen is a major devotional event. Visitors of other faiths are usually permitted into the courtyards when dressed appropriately, though access to the tomb chamber can be restricted. Its seminaries draw students from many countries.
