About Imam Husayn Shrine, Karbala
Husayn ibn Ali, grandson of the Prophet Muhammad, was killed at the Battle of Karbala in 680 CE along with family members and companions. His death became a defining event for Shia Muslims, and his shrine is one of their most visited places. Its golden dome and minarets face the shrine of his half brother Abbas across a wide pedestrian area called Bayn al-Haramayn. Mourning for Husayn shapes Shia devotion around the world.
Each year, forty days after Ashura, the Arbaeen pilgrimage brings many millions of people to Karbala, many walking from Najaf over several days and fed by volunteers along the route. During Muharram the city fills with mourning processions and recitations. Non-Muslims are generally able to visit the courtyards with respect and sometimes with an escort, but entry to the inner tomb area may be limited. Volunteers serve free food and tea to visitors.
