About Meenakshi Amman Temple, Madurai
The Meenakshi Amman Temple is the living heart of Madurai, a city whose street plan radiates outward from its walls. The complex honors the goddess Meenakshi, a form of Parvati, and her consort Sundareswarar, a form of Shiva. Fourteen gateway towers covered in thousands of brightly painted figures rise above the town, the tallest reaching about fifty meters. Most of what stands today was shaped by the Nayak rulers in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries.
Inside, pilgrims move between pillared halls, the Golden Lotus Tank and the two main sanctums. The Hall of a Thousand Pillars holds a small art museum, and the nightly ritual of carrying Shiva to Meenakshi's bedchamber is a moving sight. Non-Hindus may enter most areas but not the inner sanctums.
