About Meroë Pyramids and Jebel Barkal

The Kingdom of Kush ruled the middle Nile for over a thousand years and for a time even governed Egypt as its Twenty-fifth Dynasty. At Meroë, its later capital, about two hundred steep sided pyramids cluster on desert ridges, marking royal tombs. Their chapels carry reliefs of rulers before gods such as Amun, Isis and the lion headed Apedemak, a distinctly Nubian deity. These pyramids are smaller and steeper than those of Egypt.

Further north near Karima, the flat topped sandstone mountain of Jebel Barkal was revered as the home of Amun. Temples at its foot, including the Great Temple of Amun, made it a center of kingship and coronation. A rock pinnacle on its face was seen as a royal cobra. Both sites are UNESCO listed but have been difficult to reach since Sudan's war began in 2023. Its sacred role lasted centuries.
