About Lake Tana Monasteries
Lake Tana, source of the Blue Nile, is dotted with islands and peninsulas that shelter around twenty Orthodox monasteries. Over centuries they protected manuscripts, crosses and royal treasures during times of conflict. Many churches are round with thatched or tin roofs, and their inner walls are covered with vivid paintings of saints, biblical scenes and Ethiopian legends. Monks continue to live, pray and farm on several of these islands today, keeping traditions alive.
The most visited is Ura Kidane Mehret on the Zege Peninsula, reached by a forest path from the shore. Others, such as Daga Estifanos, hold the remains of medieval emperors. Some island monasteries, including Tana Qirqos, admit only men, a long-standing monastic rule. Morning boat trips from Bahir Dar can include several monasteries and a stop to see where the Blue Nile leaves the lake. Hippos are sometimes seen too.
