About Dhamek Stupa, Sarnath
In the Deer Park at Sarnath, the newly awakened Buddha gave his first teaching to five companions, setting the Wheel of Dharma in motion. The massive Dhamek Stupa, a solid cylinder of brick and stone about 43 meters tall, marks the spot. Its lower section carries finely carved floral and geometric bands from the Gupta era.
Around it lie the ruins of monasteries and the broken shaft of an Ashokan pillar. The famous lion capital that once crowned this pillar, now the national emblem of India, is displayed in the excellent site museum. Jains also revere Sarnath as the birthplace of the eleventh Tirthankara, Shreyansanatha, and a Jain temple stands nearby.
