About Triveni Sangam, Prayagraj

At Prayagraj, formerly Allahabad, the muddy Ganges meets the greener Yamuna, and tradition holds that the invisible Saraswati joins them underground. This confluence, the Triveni Sangam, is among the holiest bathing places in Hinduism. Pilgrims take small boats out to platforms in midstream to immerse themselves, perform rites for ancestors and scatter ashes.

Every twelve years the riverbanks host the Kumbh Mela, the largest religious gathering on earth, with an Ardh Kumbh at the six year mark and an annual Magh Mela each winter. During these events a vast tent city rises on the floodplain, and processions of naga sadhus lead the royal bathing days. Outside festival times the Sangam is calmer and boatmen are easy to find.
