About Shaman Rock, Olkhon Island, Lake Baikal
Lake Baikal, the oldest and deepest lake in the world, is revered by the Buryat people as a sacred sea, and Olkhon Island at its heart is believed to be the dwelling place of powerful spirits. Shaman Rock, or Burkhan Cape, is a twin-peaked marble and granite crag near the village of Khuzhir. It is counted among the nine holiest places of Asian shamanism and is linked to Tengri, the eternal blue sky.
Buryat tradition tells that the rock's cave once hosted the spirit master of Olkhon, and for generations ordinary people dared approach only for rituals. Today, wooden serge posts wrapped in colorful ribbons stand on the cape, where visitors leave small offerings. A Buddhist stupa nearby reflects the mingling of Buryat Buddhism with older spirit worship. At sunset the rock glows above the clear water.
