About White Horse Temple

According to tradition, the White Horse Temple was founded in 68 CE after Emperor Ming of the Han dynasty dreamed of a golden figure and sent envoys west in search of Buddhist teachings. They returned with two Indian monks and scriptures carried on a white horse, and the emperor established a monastery near his capital at Luoyang. It is honored as the cradle of Chinese Buddhism.

The present halls date mostly from the Ming and Qing dynasties. Stone horses flank the gate, and the tombs of the two founding monks lie within the grounds. To the east stands the 13-story Qiyun Pagoda. In recent decades, India, Thailand and Myanmar have built temples in their own national styles beside the old complex, making it a gathering place for Buddhist architecture from across Asia.
