About Shikharji (Parasnath Hill)
Shikharji, on Parasnath Hill in Jharkhand, is the holiest pilgrimage site for Jains. Twenty of the twenty four Tirthankaras, including Parshvanatha, are believed to have attained moksha on its slopes. Small shrines called tonks, each holding carved footprints, mark the spots along the ridge, which rises to about 1,350 meters.
Pilgrims start from the town of Madhuban well before dawn and walk a circuit of about 27 kilometers, visiting every tonk barefoot and often fasting, before descending in the afternoon. Many make the journey dozens of times in a lifetime. Palanquins carried by local porters help elderly devotees.
