About Temple of Confucius, Qufu

In Qufu, the hometown of Confucius, a modest shrine set up in his former house a year after his death in 479 BCE grew into one of the largest temple complexes in China. Successive dynasties enlarged it until it covered a long axis of courtyards, gateways and stele pavilions. It became the model for Confucian temples across East Asia.

The focus is Dacheng Hall, the Hall of Great Perfection, with its yellow roofs and stone columns carved with coiling dragons. Nearby, the Apricot Altar marks where Confucius is said to have taught his disciples. The temple forms a trio with the Kong Family Mansion, home of his descendants, and the Cemetery of Confucius, a wooded burial ground holding the sage's tomb and those of many generations of his family.
