About Tenrikyo Church Headquarters

Tenrikyo began in 1838 when Nakayama Miki, a farmwoman in the village of Shoyashiki, was believed to receive revelations from God the Parent. Her teachings emphasize the Joyous Life, in which people live in harmony through helping one another. The city of Tenri grew around her home, and it is unusual in Japan for being named after a religion.

The heart of the faith is the Jiba, a spot in the main sanctuary that followers regard as the place of original human creation. The Kanrodai stand marks it, and the sanctuary is open on all four sides so that worshippers can face it from any direction. Followers who come here speak of returning home, and volunteers in black happi coats greet visitors warmly.
