About Ise Grand Shrine
Ise Jingu is the most sacred shrine in Shinto and the spiritual home of the Japanese imperial family. It comprises the Naiku, or inner shrine, dedicated to the sun goddess Amaterasu, and the Geku, or outer shrine, honoring Toyouke, goddess of food and harvest, along with more than a hundred smaller shrines. For centuries ordinary Japanese saved for years to make an Ise pilgrimage at least once in life.
The main sanctuaries are rebuilt from fresh cypress every twenty years in a ceremony called Shikinen Sengu, most recently in 2013, preserving ancient carpentry techniques and a sense of perpetual renewal. Visitors cross the Uji Bridge over the Isuzu River and walk gravel paths through towering cedars, though only the outer fence of the main hall can be approached. The Okage Yokocho lanes nearby recreate a lively Edo period pilgrim town.
