About Cao'an Temple, Jinjiang
On a quiet hillside south of Quanzhou stands a small granite shrine that historians treat as a living fossil. Cao'an is widely regarded as the only surviving temple of Manichaeism, the dualist world religion founded by the Persian prophet Mani in the third century CE. The faith once stretched from Roman North Africa to the Chinese coast, then faded under persecution almost everywhere.
Inside, a stone relief carved into the cliff face shows Mani seated as the Buddha of Light, his robes and halo blending Persian and Chinese styles. Local villagers came to venerate the figure within a Buddhist and folk framework, and that continuing devotion helped the building survive. An inscription urging purity, light, power and wisdom echoes core Manichaean teaching.
The temple forms part of the Quanzhou World Heritage listing, which celebrates the port as a medieval crossroads of Islam, Hinduism, Christianity, Buddhism and Manichaeism.
