About Casa Branca do Engenho Velho, Salvador

Ile Axe Iya Nasso Oka, known as Casa Branca do Engenho Velho, is widely regarded as one of the oldest Candomble houses in Brazil. It was founded by African women of Yoruba descent in Salvador, and its lineage gave rise to other great terreiros of the Ketu nation. In 1984 it became the first Afro-Brazilian temple protected as national heritage, a landmark in the recognition of these traditions. It remains deeply respected today.

The terreiro is a living religious community, not a museum. Its grounds hold shrines to the orixas and a boat shaped structure dedicated to Oxum. Public ceremonies with drumming and dance may sometimes be attended, but guests must follow the house's rules, dress in light colors, and never film without permission. Contact the community or a respectful local guide before visiting. Remember that the sacred grounds serve a community first, and visitors are guests at its invitation.
