About Christ the Redeemer, Corcovado
The statue of Christ the Redeemer stands 30 meters tall on the summit of Corcovado, arms open over Rio de Janeiro. Designed by Heitor da Silva Costa with sculptor Paul Landowski, it was built of reinforced concrete faced with soapstone tiles and inaugurated in 1931 as a symbol of Brazil's Catholic faith. The idea for a religious monument on Corcovado dated back to the nineteenth century, and Catholics across Brazil donated funds to make it real. The statue was named one of the New Seven Wonders in 2007.
At its base a small chapel dedicated to Our Lady of Aparecida hosts Masses, baptisms and weddings. The summit sits within Tijuca National Park, and the rack railway climbs through Atlantic rainforest to reach it. Though crowds and cameras dominate the platform, early visitors often find a moment of stillness as clouds part to reveal the bay, Sugarloaf and the city below. Pilgrims climb for prayer as well as for the panorama.
