About El Ghriba Synagogue, Djerba
The Jewish community of Djerba is among the oldest in the diaspora, and local tradition says its first synagogue incorporated a stone from the Temple in Jerusalem. El Ghriba, meaning the stranger or the wondrous one, stands in the village of Erriadh. Its current building, decorated with blue tiles, painted wood and stained glass, was rebuilt in the late nineteenth century. It is also a symbol of Tunisian Jewish heritage.
Each spring at Lag BaOmer, pilgrims from Tunisia, France, Israel and elsewhere gather for a festive pilgrimage. They light candles, place eggs inscribed with wishes in a grotto, and parade a decorated menorah through the village. The site has faced deadly attacks in 2002 and 2023, and security is tight. Visitors of all faiths are welcome outside the Sabbath. The pilgrimage includes music, shared meals and blessings for good fortune.
