About Ukonsaari Island, Lake Inari
Ukonsaari is a small, steep island of bare rock rising from the cold waters of Lake Inari in Finnish Lapland. For the Inari Sámi it was a sieidi, a sacred place where offerings were made to secure good fishing and hunting. Its Sámi name, Äijih, is linked to an old man or grandfather spirit, and the Finnish name honors the thunder god Ukko.
In 1873 archaeologists found a silver ring and other offerings in a cave on the island. Today it is a protected heritage site, and visitors are asked not to climb or land without permission, out of respect for Sámi beliefs. Summer boat cruises from Inari village circle the island, and the Siida museum explains Sámi culture and spirituality.
