About Hill of Crosses
On a small hillfort mound north of Šiauliai, Lithuanians began planting crosses after the uprisings against Russian rule in 1831 and 1863, perhaps to remember those whose bodies were never returned. Over time the practice grew, and today crosses, crucifixes, rosaries and carved images of every size crowd the hill, clattering softly in the wind.
Soviet authorities bulldozed the hill several times, yet crosses reappeared overnight, turning it into a quiet act of defiance. Pope John Paul II visited in 1993, and a Franciscan hermitage now stands nearby. Visitors are welcome to add a cross of their own, which can be bought from stalls at the entrance.
