About Trinity Lavra of St. Sergius, Sergiev Posad
St. Sergius of Radonezh built a small wooden church in the forest around 1337, and the community he founded became the most important monastery in Russia. Sergius blessed Prince Dmitry Donskoy before his victory at Kulikovo in 1380, linking the monastery with national identity. Behind its fortified white walls rise the blue and gold domes of the Dormition Cathedral and the small Trinity Cathedral where the saint's relics lie.
Andrei Rublev painted his famous Trinity icon for this monastery; the original is now in Moscow, but a copy hangs in the iconostasis. Pilgrims queue to venerate the relics and draw water from a chapel over a holy well. The Lavra also houses a seminary and theological academy.
