About Upopoy National Ainu Museum and Park

Upopoy, meaning singing together in the Ainu language, opened in 2020 beside Lake Poroto as a national center for the revival of Ainu culture. The Ainu, the indigenous people of Hokkaido, understand the world as filled with kamuy, spirits present in animals, plants, fire, water and tools. Rituals send these spirits back to their realm with gratitude.

The site includes the National Ainu Museum, reconstructed cise houses, and a performance hall for traditional dance and music recognized as intangible heritage. On a hill nearby stands a memorial facility where ancestral remains returned from universities are housed with respect and ceremonies held. Daily programs introduce prayer rites, woodcarving, embroidery and the mukkuri mouth harp, presented by Ainu staff.
