About Uxmal

Uxmal is the finest example of the Puuc style, an architecture of smooth lower walls and richly carved upper friezes. In a region with no rivers, the city depended on rain stored in underground cisterns, so images of Chaak, the long-nosed rain god, cover its facades in hundreds of stone masks. Water rituals and prayers for rain were therefore at the center of civic and religious life, and the city's rulers presented themselves as guardians of that vital gift from the sky.

The Pyramid of the Magician, with its unusual rounded sides, is wrapped in legend: a dwarf born from an egg is said to have raised it in a single night. Nearby, the Nunnery Quadrangle and the Governor's Palace show remarkable geometric precision. Uxmal is quieter than Chichen Itza, and an evening light show brings out the carved details against the night sky. Ancient causeways link Uxmal with the nearby city of Kabah, once joined by ceremony.
