About Basilica of Esquipulas

In 1594 the sculptor Quirio Cataño carved a crucifix of dark wood for the town of Esquipulas. Over time it darkened further with candle smoke, and the Black Christ became one of the most venerated images in Central America. Many scholars note that the site may also have held earlier Maya significance. The town became a crossroads of devotion for the whole region, with pilgrims walking for many days along old mountain routes.

The white baroque basilica, completed in 1758, stands at the end of a broad plaza. Pilgrims arrive from Guatemala, Honduras, El Salvador and Mexico, especially for the January feast. They queue to pass behind the altar, and many leave walking backward so as not to turn away from the image. Stalls sell sweets, ribbons and souvenirs. Clay tablets of sacred earth are sold nearby, a custom with deep regional roots.
