About Ancient Olympia, Sanctuary of Zeus

Olympia lies in a green valley where the Alpheios and Kladeos rivers meet. The Altis, its sacred grove, held the great Temple of Zeus, whose seated statue by Phidias counted among the Seven Wonders of the ancient world. The older Temple of Hera nearby is where the Olympic flame is lit today with a parabolic mirror before each modern Games.

For more than a thousand years the Games were a religious festival honoring Zeus, with sacrifices at his ash altar alongside the races. A sacred truce allowed athletes and spectators to travel safely. Visitors walk through the stone tunnel into the original stadium, then visit the museum with the pediment sculptures and the workshop of Phidias.
