About Monasteries of Meteora
Meteora means suspended in the air, and the name fits. Giant pillars of conglomerate rock rise from the Thessalian plain, and from the 14th century monks built monasteries on their summits as refuges from war and the world. Supplies and visitors were once hauled up in nets by windlass. Of more than twenty foundations, six remain active, home to monks and nuns.
Today steps cut into the rock replace the nets, though the old winches still hang in place. Inside, frescoed churches glow with gold and color. The Great Meteoron, founded by St. Athanasios, is the largest. Sunset over the pillars, seen from viewpoints along the road, is a highlight for many travelers.
