About Sanctuary of Apollo, Delphi
The Greeks believed Zeus released two eagles from the ends of the earth and they met at Delphi, marking it as the navel of the world. On the slopes of Parnassus, the Pythia, Apollo's priestess, delivered oracles that guided city states, colonists and kings. Treasuries built by rival cities lined the Sacred Way up to the Temple of Apollo, above which lie a theater and a stadium for the Pythian Games.
Below the main sanctuary is the Tholos of Athena Pronaia, a graceful circular building, and the Castalian Spring where pilgrims purified themselves. The museum holds the bronze Charioteer. Modern practitioners of Hellenic polytheism sometimes hold respectful observances here, a reminder that the gods of Delphi still have devotees.
