About Capernaum and the Sea of Galilee
Capernaum was a fishing village on the northern shore of the Sea of Galilee, and the Gospels describe it as the base of Jesus' ministry in Galilee. Here he is said to have taught in the synagogue, healed the sick and called fishermen such as Peter and Andrew. The ruins are managed by the Franciscans and reveal basalt houses, streets and an elegant white limestone synagogue from late antiquity. Fishing boats still work the lake.
A modern church hovers on pillars above an octagonal Byzantine church, which in turn covers a house venerated since early times as the home of Peter. Along the shore are other Gospel sites, including Tabgha with its loaves and fishes mosaic and the Mount of Beatitudes. Boat rides on the lake, also called Lake Kinneret, are popular with pilgrim groups who read Gospel passages as they cross the calm water.
