About Basílica de la Sagrada Família
Antoni Gaudí took over this expiatory church in 1883 and devoted the rest of his life to it, living in his workshop on site in his last years. He imagined a building that would preach in stone, with three great facades narrating the Nativity, the Passion and the Glory of Christ, and eighteen towers for the apostles, evangelists, Mary and Jesus. Construction, funded by donations and tickets, continues today.
Inside, tree-like columns branch toward a ceiling of stars, and stained glass floods the nave with green and blue on one side and red and gold on the other. Pope Benedict XVI consecrated the basilica in 2010. Gaudí is buried in the crypt, and a Mass is still celebrated for worshippers who come to pray rather than sightsee.
