About Basilica del Santo Niño, Cebu
The Basilica Minore del Santo Niño stands on the spot where, in 1565, a Spanish soldier found a small image of the Child Jesus in a burned house. The statue was believed to be the one Ferdinand Magellan gave to Queen Juana of Cebu at her baptism in 1521. Augustinian friars founded a church there, making it the oldest Catholic church in the Philippines.
The present stone church dates from 1739 and was restored after the 2013 Bohol earthquake. The Santo Niño, dressed in royal robes, sits behind glass in a side chapel, and endless lines of devotees file past to touch it. Outside, candle sellers dance the sinulog prayer step. Magellan's Cross, planted in 1521, stands in a pavilion nearby.
