About Gurdwara Janam Asthan, Nankana Sahib

Gurdwara Janam Asthan marks the place where Guru Nanak, founder of Sikhism, was born in 1469 in the village then called Rai Bhoi di Talwandi. The present gurdwara with its white domes was built under Maharaja Ranjit Singh in the early nineteenth century. It is one of the most important Sikh pilgrimage sites anywhere.

Several other gurdwaras in Nankana Sahib recall episodes from the Guru's childhood, including where he studied and where he spent his father's money feeding holy men. Thousands of Sikh pilgrims from India and around the world arrive each November for Guru Nanak's birthday, under special visa arrangements between the two countries.
