About Gur Sikh Temple, Abbotsford
The Gur Sikh Temple was built between 1908 and 1911 by Sikh pioneers who came to work in British Columbia's sawmills and farms. Despite discrimination and restrictive immigration laws, they pooled their earnings and labor to raise a wooden gurdwara that served as a place of prayer, community and refuge. Its simple design, with a raised prayer hall, reflected the means of that early community and the values of humility and service.
It is the oldest surviving gurdwara in North America and a National Historic Site of Canada. The Guru Granth Sahib is still honored here on special occasions, and a museum tells the story of early Sikh Canadians. A larger gurdwara nearby handles daily worship and langar, the free community meal shared by all who come. The site is a living reminder of the courage of early Sikh settlers and of their contribution to Canadian life.
