About Konark Sun Temple
The Konark Sun Temple was conceived as a colossal stone chariot for Surya, the sun god, drawn by seven horses on twenty four intricately carved wheels. Built around 1250 by King Narasimhadeva I, it once had a towering spire, which collapsed centuries ago. The surviving assembly hall still rises dramatically above the coastal plain near the Bay of Bengal.
Every surface is covered in sculpture: musicians, dancers, animals, battle scenes, daily life and sensuous couples. The wheels double as sundials whose spokes can tell the time. Although worship no longer takes place inside, the site remains revered, and the Chandrabhaga Mela draws pilgrims to the nearby beach each winter.
