About Mont-Saint-Michel Abbey
Tradition says the Archangel Michael appeared to Bishop Aubert of Avranches in 708 and asked for a sanctuary on a granite islet in the bay. Benedictine monks later stacked church, cloister and refectory onto the rock in a breathtaking vertical layout known as La Merveille. Medieval pilgrims called miquelots crossed the dangerous sands, some drowning in the fast tides.
After serving as a prison during the Revolution, the abbey became a national monument. Since 2001 the Monastic Fraternities of Jerusalem have kept prayer alive, singing offices in the abbey church. Guided barefoot walks across the bay revive the old pilgrim approach at low tide.
