About Saut-d'Eau Waterfall

Saut-d'Eau is a cascade in Haiti's Central Plateau where, according to tradition, the Virgin Mary appeared in a palm tree in the nineteenth century. The place became a pilgrimage site for both Catholics, who honor Our Lady of Mount Carmel, and Vodou practitioners, who honor the lwa Ezili Danto and Danbala in the falling water. The town's name simply means waterfall, yet for many Haitians it carries the weight of holy ground and family memory passed down across generations.

Each July, thousands of pilgrims bathe in the falls, scrub themselves with leaves, tie colored strings to trees and leave candles and offerings, seeking healing, luck and spiritual cleansing. The church in town fills with Masses at the same time. The pilgrimage is a powerful expression of Haitian faith. Travelers should check current safety advice carefully and go only with trusted local hosts. Respect is the most important thing to bring.
