About Salt Cathedral of Zipaquira

Miners in Zipaquira long kept a small sanctuary deep in the salt mine to pray for protection. That devotion grew into a cathedral carved inside the mountain, first opened in the 1950s and replaced by the present one in 1995, some 180 meters below the surface. Salt has been mined in these hills for centuries, first by the Muisca people, who traded it widely across the highlands, and later by colonial and modern miners.

Visitors descend a tunnel past fourteen chapels marking the Stations of the Cross, each carved from rock salt and softly lit. The route opens into a vast nave where a huge cross is cut into the wall. Sunday Mass is held underground, and the mining heritage of the Muisca and later Colombians is told in the visitor areas. It is often called a jewel of Colombian architecture. It feels deeply peaceful.
