About Temple Square, Salt Lake City
Temple Square is the headquarters campus of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Brigham Young chose the site in 1847, days after the pioneers reached the Salt Lake Valley, and the granite Salt Lake Temple took forty years to complete. Its six spires and the gilded angel Moroni became a symbol of the faith. The square remains the spiritual and administrative center for millions of members around the world.
Only Church members in good standing may enter the temple, which is undergoing a long seismic renovation. Visitors are welcome in the gardens, the domed Tabernacle with its famous organ, and the Assembly Hall. The Tabernacle Choir at Temple Square rehearses and broadcasts weekly, and free guided tours, often led by missionaries, explain Latter-day Saint beliefs. Twice yearly, General Conference gatherings draw crowds to the nearby Conference Center from across the globe.
