About Iona Abbey
The Irish monk Columba landed on this small Hebridean island in 563 and founded a community that carried Christianity across Scotland and northern England. Iona became a center of learning where scholars may have begun the Book of Kells, and early Scottish kings were buried in its graveyard. Viking raids later forced the monks to flee, and a Benedictine abbey rose on the site around 1200.
In 1938 George MacLeod founded the Iona Community, an ecumenical group that rebuilt the abbey buildings with volunteer labor. Daily worship is open to all. Pilgrims often join the weekly island walk, which visits St. Columba's Bay, the marble quarry and the Hill of the Angels, and many speak of the island as a thin place where heaven feels close.
