About Lindisfarne (Holy Island)
In 635 King Oswald of Northumbria invited the Irish monk Aidan from Iona to found a monastery on this tidal island. Under Aidan and later Cuthbert, Lindisfarne became the heart of Christian mission in northern England, and its monks produced the Lindisfarne Gospels, a jewel of early medieval art. A Viking raid in 793 shocked Christian Europe and is often taken as the start of the Viking Age.
Pilgrims still cross the sands following the Pilgrims' Way, a line of tall poles across the mudflats, at low tide. On the island are the red sandstone ruins of the Norman priory, the parish church of St. Mary, and small retreat houses. When the tide covers the causeway, the island empties of day trippers and recovers its quiet.
