About Las Lajas Sanctuary
Las Lajas Sanctuary seems to grow out of the canyon of the Guaitara River near the border with Ecuador. Tradition says that in 1754 an Indigenous woman, Maria Mueses, and her deaf daughter Rosa sheltered here during a storm, and Rosa spoke for the first time, pointing to an image of the Virgin that appeared on the rock face. The shrine draws pilgrims year round. Its story still inspires deep devotion today.
The image, still visible on the stone behind the altar, became the focus of devotion for people from Colombia and Ecuador alike. The present neo Gothic church, completed in 1949, spans the gorge on a stone bridge. Walls along the path are covered with plaques of thanks for favors received, and a cable car offers views of the dramatic setting. The setting has been called one of the most beautiful churches in the world.
