About Mission San Juan Capistrano
Founded in 1776 by Franciscan friar Junipero Serra, Mission San Juan Capistrano was one of the twenty-one Spanish missions along the California coast. Acjachemen people, many of whom were brought into the mission system under harsh conditions, built its adobe buildings and the Great Stone Church, which collapsed in an 1812 earthquake. Today the mission is a museum and a place of worship, set amid busy streets of a small California town.
Serra Chapel, still used for worship, is considered among the oldest buildings in California. Gardens, fountains and the ruined church create a reflective setting. The mission is famous for the swallows that return each spring. Today it also tells the story of the Acjachemen Nation, whose descendants remain in the area and help shape its interpretation. The story is complex, and the mission invites reflection on faith, colonization and resilience together.
